Inflammatory Foods: What They Are and Why You Might Want to Avoid Them

Have you ever felt bloated, sluggish, or achy after eating—without any clear reason why?
You might be dealing with inflammation, and your diet could be playing a big role.
What Is Inflammation?
Inflammation is your body’s natural response to injury or illness. In small doses, it’s helpful—it helps you heal. But when inflammation becomes chronic, it can contribute to:
•Weight gain
•Fatigue
•Brain fog
•Joint pain
•Acne or skin issues
•Digestive problems
•Hormonal imbalance
•Autoimmune flares
One of the biggest culprits? The food we eat.
Common Inflammatory Foods
While everyone’s body is different, the following foods are known to promote inflammation in many people:
1. Refined Sugar
Spikes blood sugar and increases inflammatory markers. Think soda, pastries, candy, and sugary cereals.
2. Processed Foods
Often loaded with preservatives, additives, and artificial ingredients that your body sees as a threat.
3. Seed Oils
Canola, soybean, corn, and other highly refined vegetable oils are high in omega-6 fats that, in excess, can tip the inflammation scale.
4. Refined Carbs
White bread, pasta, and pastries break down quickly into sugar and can lead to blood sugar crashes and inflammation.
5. Dairy & Gluten (for some people)
Not inherently inflammatory for everyone, but common triggers for those with sensitivities or gut issues.
6. Alcohol
Excessive alcohol disrupts the gut lining and increases systemic inflammation.
What to Eat Instead
Try focusing on anti-inflammatory, whole-food alternatives:
•Colorful fruits & vegetables
•Omega-3 rich foods (like salmon, flax, chia)
•Healthy fats (olive oil, avocado, nuts)
•Lean proteins
•Whole grains (quinoa, brown rice)
•Herbs & spices (turmeric, ginger, garlic)
Why It Matters
Reducing inflammatory foods can improve more than just physical symptoms—it can boost mood, sharpen focus, support hormones, and enhance long-term health. Many of my clients are shocked at how quickly they feel better just by making a few strategic changes.
